Community identifies priorities for new youth mental health research

Embrace at The Kids Research Institute Australia has identified the top 10 unexplored infant, child and youth mental health research priorities in consultation with the Western Australian community.

Embrace @ The Kids Research Institute Australia has identified the top 10 unexplored infant, child and youth mental health research priorities in consultation with the Western Australian community.

Almost 700 people from across WA completed a survey on the mental health research that they want to see happen. Their ideas were then developed by the Embrace team and young people, mental health professionals, parents and carers to identify the top 10 research priorities.

Among the priorities identified were the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island perspectives in mental health research, clinical help for young people who have experienced trauma, and ways of making mental health services more accessible for children, young people and families.

Embrace Co-Director Professor Ashleigh Lin said the list of priorities would inform future research undertaken within Embrace.

It’s critical that mental health research reflects the needs of the wider community - Prof Ashleigh Lin

The work of Embrace is proudly supported by Principal Partner Rio Tinto.

This project was also supported by a financial contribution from the Children and Adolescent Health Service.

Embrace @ The Kids Research Institute Australia is Western Australia’s first research collaboration devoted to the mental health of children and young people ages 0-25.

Embrace works with the community, service providers and partner organisations to solve the mental health challenges faced by children and young people in WA.

You can read the priority-setting project findings report, including the full list of priorities, as well as the Embrace research strategy, here.
