Embrace 2022 Research Award winners announced

The six winners of the Embrace 2022 Research Awards have been announced.

Presentations at international conferences, the development of a resource to combat self-stigma and the release of findings from a national survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people will all be funded by the Embrace 2022 Research Awards, after the six winners were announced.

Researchers at The Kids Research Institute Australia were eligible to apply for up to $5000 in funding to support research translation projects, professional development activities and conference travel.

Below is the full list of winners and more information on their submissions.

  • Alix Woolard will present findings from a program exploring the relationship between medical trauma, the quality of parent-infant interactions and sensory processing to the World Association for Infant Mental Health Congress, held in Dublin, Ireland.
  • Bep Uink’s research translation activity for Walkern Katatjdin will see community and Elder forums held to present findings from Australia’s largest national survey into the mental health and social wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people. Feedback from the forums will be integrated with the survey findings into a community report.
  • Blake Cavve’s professional development submission will see him learn from collaborators with expertise in specialised analytical skills and predictive modelling methods. This will support Blake and PRE-EMPT’s efforts to create tools to predict mental disorders in young people.
  • Hamza Bouras will present on accessibility of services in communities impacted by suicide clusters at the International Association for Suicide Prevention World Congress, held in Piran, Slovenia.
  • Megan Ansell will develop a resource to guide healthcare workers in conversations with young people about anxiety and depression. The resource will improve interactions between clinicians and young people experiencing self-stigma.
  • Wendy Simpson will attend workshops and presentations at the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Conference, held in Queensland. This will support Wendy’s project to develop a new approach to infant and early childhood mental health screening and support in Western Australia.
