Senior researcher for Embrace @ The Kids Research Institute Australia Dr Alix Woolard is hosting a new podcast.
On Embracing the Mind, which is now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon and Google, we share stories from people with lived experience of mental health diagnoses and disorders.
We also learn from some of the leading researchers in mental health on the latest treatments and advancements in their field.
Join Dr Woolard, a senior researcher in childhood trauma, to learn more about the links between trauma and psychosis, how we can overcome self-stigma, and why we need to make research practices more culturally sensitive.
“I’ve always been passionate about science communications so I feel honoured that people are willing to share their personal mental health journeys with me, and that I can talk to some of the leading experts in Australia about their work,” Dr Woolard said.
In our first episode, Dr Woolard is joined by Corey Casey, an EA at Rio Tinto, who overcame childhood trauma to create a bright future for herself. Next, Dr Woolard is joined by Professor Helen Milroy AM, one of Australia’s leading psychiatrists and mental health researchers, to discuss the historical legacies impacting the transmission of trauma in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and how healing can take place.
Guests on episodes two, also available now, include Richmond great Michael Mitchell, a Yamatji man who experienced discrimination during his WAFL and AFL career, and The Kids Research Institute Australia researcher and PhD candidate Phoebe George, who shares her insight into how sport and physical activity interact with mental health.
Embrace is supported by its principal partner, Rio Tinto.
If any episodes cause you distress, please reach out to a loved one or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
