WA Governor Chris Dawson invites further youth mental health research

Youth mental health was on the agenda when His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson APM, Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson visited the Embrace team last week.

Embrace Co-Directors Professor Ash Lin and Professor Helen Milroy AM discussed the research being done by the Embrace and wider youth mental health teams with the Governor and his wife.

Mrs Darrilyn Dawson, a former schoolteacher and principal, asked about Embrace’s research into teacher preparedness to deal with student trauma and how the WA community could better support teachers to work with children with complex needs.

Senior Research Officer Dr Alix Woolard also shared insights from her research into childhood trauma with the pair.

Both the Governor and Mrs Dawson were eager to hear more about our research, particularly in terms of how we can work with families and teachers respectively -

“We are always grateful for the opportunity to talk about our work, and it is pleasing that leaders of our community are genuinely engaged with the important work we do.”

His Excellency and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson’s visit was part of a wider tour of The Kids Research Institute Australia, also visiting researchers into brain tumour research and Aboriginal health and wellbeing.
