Specialised training for clinical psychologists and service providers will be delivered using funds from the Embrace Research Awards 2024, announced today.

Among the five winners of up to $5,000 each were three applicants using the funding to run training programs.

Dr Helen Morgan will train 160 clinical psychologists at interstate gender-affirming clinics to deliver a group-based parenting program. This intervention will better equip parents and caregivers of trans young people to support their child’s mental health.

Jacinta Freeman will enable members of the The Kids Research Institute Australia’s Youth Mental Health team to receive training in co-design principles and methodologies, while Oliver Keane will provide training on LGBTQA+ youth suicide prevention guidelines to service providers in WA.

The remaining winners of the independently judged awards will use the funding to attend international conferences.

A/Prof Perry, the program leader of the Mental Health and Youth program at The Kids Research Institute Australia, was invited in her capacity as chair of the Australian regional network within this international partnership. She will present findings from a project that digitally maps the journeys and experiences of LGBTQA+ young people accessing digital and face-to-face mental health support in Australia.

Julia Bak will attend the World Professional Association for Transgender Health in Lisbon and present on the development of a training program on the LGBTQA+ suicide prevention guidelines.
