Kulunga's Shanara Quartermaine helps attendees paint leaves for the healing tree
Budding students were eager to speak to Embrace and Kulunga staff about cultural safety and mental health at Murdoch University’s 2026 Career Fair.
For Embrace, the fair was an opportunity to share upcoming internship opportunities in mental health research. Click here to learn more and submit your expression of interest. These internships are open to students in the final stages of their undergraduate degree, or a master’s degree, in mental health or a related field.
The teams also gave students insight into working at The Kids, showcased their resources such as the safe yarning cards, and ran a healing tree activity to encourage mindfulness and reflection around mental health.
“We were able to have conversations with people who are preparing to enter the workforce and are keen to be culturally aware. Sharing this knowledge with them is a step towards building cultural safety across our communities.” Thomas Betts, Embrace Aboriginal Project Officer said of the fair.
“Having elements of culture showcased through our stall enticed students and industry to come and have a yarn with us, and it was promising to see how eager they were to learn more about the work we do. It really showed that Aboriginal ways of doing have a place across different disciplines beyond mental health.”
The yarning cards were also popular with organisations including Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, who plan to use the cards across their projects and embed cultural safety into their curriculums.
The yarning cards and healing tree also drew discussion around creativity and mental health, highlighting a key topic for the upcoming season of Embrace’s podcast, Embracing the Mind.
Launching in April, the new season will focus on creativity and wellbeing and includes interviews with notable creatives across the country.
Several students shared what creativity means for their mental health, with their recorded answers due to feature in a special episode exploring young people and creativity. To listen to previous seasons and subscribe for updates on the new series release, you can follow the link here.
